[Daftar Gunung] MOUNTAINS OF THE INDONESIAN ARCHIPELAGO
92 Mountain Summits with Prominence of 1,500 meters or greater

This list includes 92 summits on the islands of the Indonesian Archipelago, including the following:

86 Summits in the Republic of Indonesia.

5 Summits in eastern Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah on Borneo), including one summit that sits on the border between Malaysia and Indonesia.

2 Summits that lie wholly in the new nation of Timor l'Este.

This list is one of 20 lists for the Asian ultra-prominence mountains, corresponding to "T" on the continental map. Please come back for an upcoming reference map and page for Asia.

Compiled 2005 by Jonathan de Ferranti and Aaron Maizlish

FOOTNOTES

Borneo
Elevations were derived primarily from SRTM analysis and Soviet topographic maps. Although most of Kalimantan was remapped at 1:50,000 in the 1990s; the mountainous areas near the Malaysia border were unavailable to us.

[B1] The highpoint of Malaysia and number 20 on the World's 50 finest.

[B8] Our analysis of SRTM data suggests that the published elevation of 2092m is probably too high, we estimate 2040m.

West Papua
Irian Jaya may be the most poorly mapped region on earth, outside of the polar regions. Our DEM analysis revealed 12 ultra-prominent summits; which aside from Puncak Jaya, are relatively unknown. The eastern half of the island, belonging to Papua New Guinea, contains an additional 17 ultra summits.

[WP1] This is the highpoint of Indonesia, of the island of New Guinea, and the ninth most prominent point on earth. It is also the highest island summit on earth. Puncak Jaya (meaning "Victory Peak") signifies the mountain, while Carstensz Pyramid is the name of the fine summit. For the most part these two names are regarded as synonomous, although some mountaineers insist that they signify two different summits on the same mountain. Carstenz Pyramid is also considered by many to be one of the legitimate "seven summits." For summits on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea please refer to the Papua New Guinea page.

[WP12] We have translitered this word from Cyrillic and have not confirmed its conventional spelling, if any.

Maluku
[M2] Our analysis of SRTM data suggests that the published elevation of 2736m is probably too high.

Nusa Tenggara
[NT2] The elevation for Agung on most websites is 3142m. Analysis of IFSAR data and site visits by climbers indicated that the true elevation is close to 3031. See also de Ferranti's misquotes page, and Slayden's peakbagger page.

[NT3] The cited elevation of 2755m for Tambora appears to be too high. The 2722m elevation provided on this site is more consistent with the SRTM data. Andy Martin has pointed out that Tambora was once in the World Top 50 by prominence! It has been estimated that Tambora was as much as 14,000 feet high before it exploded in April 1815, darkening the skies around the world, and causing the "year without summer" in the United States.

Sulawesi
Sulawesi was completely remapped in 1995, with assistance from the Swiss. The resulting 1:50,000 topographic series has provided us with numerous spot elevations and modern toponymy. Names for the Sulawesi summits are taken from this new survey and differ dramatically from older published data. Unfortunately there is a systematic discrepancy between the topographic survey and the SRTM data, which is generally higher. This discrepancy also holds true for Nusa Tenggara and Timor. We believe that the SRTM data may be superior, even allowing for the possibility of interference with vegetation, and we welcome feedback or further clarification.

[C3] The height of Fuyul Sojul is unresolved. The modern 1:50,000 topographic survey gives the highest contour interval as 3020m+20m. SRTM indicates nothing in the area is higher than approx. 2880m, although it is possible that the true summit is in a nearby void area of the DEM. The summit is called Pegunungan Ogoamas on earlier maps, and is certainly lower than the 3225m indicated on commercial publications.

[C5] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 2620m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis.

[C6] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 3037m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis.

[C8] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 2569m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis.

[C13] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 2463m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis.

[C14] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 2894m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis. If the topographic survey is correct, this would not be an ultra-prominence.

[C16] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 1533m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis.

[C17] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 2208m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis.

Sumatera

(Error Range)
{E3] The modern topographic survey indicates a spot elevation of 2394m, which appears to be too low based on DEM analysis.
